Sussex by Bent Wind is an iconic album in the heavy psychedelia and garage rock genre. Released in 1969 by this Canadian band, the record is known for its raw, direct energy, which is amplified by the spontaneous, live-in-the-studio recordings. Due to the low budget, the fast recording process, and the use of original compositions rather than covers, Sussex sounds unpolished, but it is precisely this that contributes to the authentic atmosphere and the zeitgeist of the late sixties. The music impresses with a heavy, sometimes menacing tone, and features influences from bands like The Doors, but set in a purely Canadian, underground setting. Over the years, the album has grown into one of the most sought-after collector's items among psychedelic rock enthusiasts. Originally virtually ignored and pressed in small numbers, the album has since been reissued multiple times on CD. Despite limited commercial success upon release, Sussex is regarded as an important document of Toronto’s vibrant music scene from that period. Fans of West Coast psych and gritty heavy rock will recognize themselves in the unpolished, energetic style that Bent Wind presents on this album.
