Prog - rock
Procol Harum's 1967 debut arrived in the US that countercultural September via Deram, riding the momentum of the Essex rock/baroque band's massive single 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale', which appeared only on the US pressing. The UK release followed in December on Regal Zonophone, issued in mono and omitting the hit entirely. Recorded over April to June at London's Olympic Studios, the album's mix of psychedelic rock and proto-prog included Keith Reid's lyrics set to Gary Brooker's compositions, plus Matthew Fisher's Bach-inspired 'Repent Walpurgis'. Early pressings came with Aubrey Beardsley-styled cover art by Dickinson, later Reid's wife. Long unavailable in stereo due to missing multitrack masters, it has seen numerous mono reissues; the latest from Esoteric restores the original sequencing, and in finest detail at that.
