Kaleidoscope is a rare album from 1969, recorded by the band of the same name from Puerto Rico. The music is a characteristic mix of psychedelic rock, garage, folk, and blues, with clearly audible influences from jazz. The album was recorded in the Dominican Republic and released in a limited run on the Mexican Orfeon label, making it one of the most sought-after obscurities of the ‘world rock’ of the late sixties. The atmosphere on the album is dark and experimental, with an unmistakable emphasis on menacing organ sounds and sharp fuzz guitars. The vocals are entirely in English and oscillate between bluesy nonchalance and melancholic self-pity. The lyrics, often laced with psychedelic imagery, reinforce the sense of disorientation. In this way, Kaleidoscope distinguishes itself from the more conventional garage bands of the time; the spontaneous and youthful unpolished approach gives the album an authentic and raw energy. Thus, the album is not only a product of its time, but also a fascinating glimpse into the creative potential of young Puerto Rican musicians in the psychedelic genre.
