Electròccid Àccid Alquimístic Xoc by Pau Riba is an influential album within the Catalan music landscape and marks a significant development in the artist's oeuvre. On this LP, Riba complements his avant-garde vision with a clearer electric rock sound, powerfully embracing the genre of 'rock' and, more specifically, 'classic rock'. The work is considered an early and sincere representation of what would later become known as 'roc català'. The album was recorded in the winter of 1975 with a group of musicians who had recently accompanied Riba on stage. Among them were members of Valencian bands such as Paranoia Dea and guitarist Eduardo Bort. Their collaboration enhances the musical versatility of the LP, in which diverse influences from artists such as Lou Reed, Ray Davies, and Kevin Ayers resonate. On this record, Riba manages to naturally weave the Catalan language into powerful, electric rock songs. The lyrics on Electròccid Àccid Alquimístic Xoc are a mix of poetic imagery and ironic observations. Riba addresses diverse themes such as the moon, the stars, death, love, women, and the devil, sometimes sharply and socially critically towards the bourgeoisie. This versatility makes the LP a unique and idiosyncratic work, in which he further develops his distinctive style as a lyricist. Some notable tracks characteristic of the album are Electròccid Àccid Alquimístic Xoc, Licantropia, and L’home estàtic. The title track sets the tone with its energetic and experimental approach, Licantropia offers mystical and poetic imagery, while L’home estàtic highlights Riba’s ironic and introspective side. Each song contributes to the complex whole of the album, in which musical and thematic influences merge. Electròccid Àccid Alquimístic Xoc LP was released in 1975 and was rarely reissued in the decades that followed. The album remains a milestone in Catalan rock and showcases Pau Riba at his most authentic, innovative, and uncompromising. His ability to incorporate Catalan into the rock genre makes this album highly recommended for lovers of alternative and classic rock with literary, socially engaged lyrics.
